    Hannelore Heemers, PhD, a researcher in the Department of Urology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, is the recipient of one of 21 Young Investigator Awards given by the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). Designed to encourage the most innovative minds in cancer research to focus their careers on prostate cancer, the $225,000 grant awards provide recipients with three years of funding to test transformational research questions for prostate cancer patients.

Roswell Park developed the PSA test for prostate cancer early detection and management. PSA has revolutionized the ability to monitor prostate cancer, but the test has many advantages and limitations when used for early detection. Our researchers are working to improve the PSA test to distinguish prostate cancers that are potentially aggressive and life-threatening from those that are clinically insignificant.

    The recent Buffalo News editorial (Oct. 22) by University of Minnesota professor and blogger Gary Schwitzer wags an accusing finger at Roswell Park Cancer Institute's prostate cancer awareness campaign for saying too little about the controversy concerning the challenges and value of mass prostate screening.

    There is legitimate concern that widespread use of the PSA test may overdiagnose prostate cancer and put men at risk for complications from unnecessary treatments such as surgery and radiation. Roswell Park developed the PSA test for prostate cancer detection and management, and we are well aware of the test's advantages and limitations. In fact, our researchers are working hard to improve the PSA test to make one better able to ferret out prostate cancers that are potentially aggressive and life-threatening.
